There were hundreds of villages in contaminated areas that were evacuated after the Chernobyl accident.

Shortly following the explosion, army recruits known as liquidators moved through hundreds of villages and uprooted the residents in order to relocate them out of the contaminated zone. 70 of these villages in Ukraine and Belarus have been buried underground. However, elderly people returned to their homes, claiming that they would rather die at home of radiation than die far away from homesickness. Today the elderly are legally permitted to stay, providing that the radiation level of said village is low enough. Children, however, are not, though some live illegally in the exclusion zone with parents who returned.
